Is it considered another axle?
Yes. When traveling the turnpike with weight on it, it will be picked up as an extra axle and you will be charged accordingly.
Does this mean that I can tow more than the recommended weight for my vehicle?
No. The Trailer Toad, though a weight bearing receiver that allows the tow vehicle to pull the trailer and not haul it, does not give the tow vehicle the ability to tow a heavier than recommended load. It does make it possible to tow the max load safely keeping the tow vehicles front wheels firmly on the road allowing more full steering and breaking stability and reducing the risk of structural frame damage to motorhomes used for towing.
Does it reduce sway?
Properly installed, it will reduce the amount of sway that is passed on to the tow vehicle. It will eliminate most all bounce from being transferred from the towed trailer to the tow vehicle; thus retaining full road surface contact between the front wheels maintaining all steering and braking capabilities.
What about backing up? If the axle pivots, can you back up with the Trailer Toad?
Yes, you can back up with the Trailer Toad attached. You have to use the Reverse Bar to do it though. The Reverse Bar is attached to the frame on the left side of the unit with easy to remove snap pins. You simply place the Reverse Bar over all three pins and insert the snap pins. That keeps the axle from pivoting and now the trailer will back up like a normal trailer. IMPORTANT: Be sure to put the Reverse Bar back up on the two pins after you are done backing up. Do NOT tow at highway speeds with Reverse Bar attached to axle. It could affect handling and increase tire wear.
When the Trailer Toad is in the “reverse” postion, doesn’t the tires skid if you turn sharp while backing up?
Yes, they do skid sideways a little bit and they may even rub against the equalizer bar. You will never back up enough to put wear on a tire.
Warranty?
Ninety days from date of delivery on all non-wear items. Looking at the structure, it is evident that only the best materials and components were used in the construction of the Toad. Fifteen test Toads were used for 2 years with over 20,000 miles put on each. There were no tire, bearing or hub assembly failures.
